WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE COFFEE OR CONSEQUENCES? A famous clergyman-cum-university chancellor was once asked by a class of students how he manages to stay awake into the night working despite busy days.

“We students take coffee in order to stay awake at night and study for our exams,” they said to him. “But what keeps you awake, sir, since you consume neither caffeine nor nicotine?” FINDING GREENER PASTURE THROUGH OVERSEAS STUDY

“Responsibilities,” the elderly gentleman answered. “I take responsibilities. Responsibilities keep me awake.”

It has been said by many successful people over and over again that rich people don’t sleep eight hours a day. While there are no studies to truly verify that statement, the undeniable truth is that the quest for success demands more of your time than you would normally sleep away. And successful people consistently make that sacrifice.

There is always a price attached to all major achievements.

That means you must give up some conveniences. Some luxuries must be forgone in order to reach the height for which you strain. Now the luxury may not necessarily be your material things. Those might already might have been involved.

One common, and major, the demand of goals is time.

Once you have an extraordinary prize set before you, you’d realize that with all your wisdom and resources, you require more waking hours than usual in order to obtain your achievement in no longer period than anticipated. For this reason, you give up some inconsequential activities and invest the time into your goal.

For students, this may mean staying up at night to read instead of sleeping. And this is not an easy thing to do. And it is all harder when the nervous system begins to signal body fatigue. It is at this point that some people begin to take some substances like caffeine in order to boost the alertness of their brains. Yet, even this has its limitations, as you can reach a point where you are awake but lack concentration. Of what use then is your sleeplessness?

How much sleep you can sacrifice — or how much sleeplessness your body and mind can take — is a function of the exigency of your pursuit to you. In other words, the more importance you attach to your goal, the more you can go without sleep in pursuit of it. THE BEST TIME TO PLANT YOUR SUCCESS

In times of emergency, the body is reinforced with adrenaline, which provides you with extra energy for survival. This is the same with the pursuit of your goals. Therefore although your body has a biological clock to obey no matter how long you want to exert it, even this biological clock is subject to your mental “programming”.

A young man once said, “When I remember the lives that depend upon my success, sleep to me becomes a disaster.” Granted, this statement is an exaggerated sense of duty. The truth, however, remains that if you really want what you want, if it’s truly important to you, such personal sacrifice as your time won’t
